The ones worth memorizing
1/8 = .125, 1/4 = .250, 3/8 = .375, 1/2 = .500, 5/8 = .625, 3/4 = .750 — know those six and you can derive the rest by adding .0625 (a sixteenth) or .03125 (a thirty-second). What is 1/8 inch as a decimal?
0.125 inches, or 3.18 millimeters. Each 1/8 step adds 0.125: 1/4 is .250, 3/8 is .375, and so on.
How do I convert inch fractions to millimeters?
Multiply the decimal value by 25.4. A 3/4 inch measurement is 0.750 x 25.4 = 19.05 mm.
Why do woodworkers use decimals at all?
Digital calipers, CNC software, and machinist tooling all read in thousandths. Converting a tape-measure fraction to a decimal is how hand measurement meets digital tools.
