How they are made

Each sign is CNC-carved from pine or poplar milled by an Amish sawyer a short drive from our shop, then hand-finished and stained. The letters are cut into the wood rather than printed on it, so the design has depth you can run a thumb over and nothing on the surface that can chip or peel.

Name signs and the rest

A family name sign is the piece most people come here for, and it is the one worth getting right: it goes in an entryway or above a mantel and stays there. Carved rather than printed matters more on a name than on a joke, because a name sign is read closely by everybody who visits.

The rest of the range is looser. House rules, gathering-place lines, signs about grandchildren, and a fair number that are funny about family rather than sentimental about it.

Entryways and mantels take the name and established-year pieces. Kitchens and living rooms suit the longer lines, because those are rooms people sit in long enough to read. A hallway takes a taller shape.
